What is Scholars of Color?

It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.

Let us now welcome Arturo Avila to the Scholars of Color space!

Name: Arturo Avila

Location:  Bakersfield, CA

Gender Pronouns: Him / he /el

What's your current occupation? (i.e. Student, Scientist, Coach, In transition, etc.): Academic Counselor

Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: I would describe myself as someone who is self aware. I am confident in my experiences and educational backgrounds. I also am a big advocate for mental health. I love to travel, workout, and dance.

What are you passionate about?: I’d say I’m a person who loves helping others whether it be with their academics or personal life. I strive to ensure that people feel heard when they communicate with me. I am an advocate for those who do not have a voice. All in all, I am extremely big on helping and would like to say that is mission on this planet.

What does the representation of Scholars of Color mean to you?: At first I never really thought about how there was not much people that looked like me in the higher educational field still to this day there is a small percentage of us. To me this shines light to let others know that we are here and striving to achieve more representation in the Latinx community.

If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?:  The best way to contact me is through email: aarturooavilaa@gmail.com. If you want to follow me on my social media platforms (IG, TikTok) my username is arttechno__

Anything else you would like us to know?: I am a first gen, first born, first to go into a higher education program and received a Masters in Education: Higher Eduction. I am someone who lends a helping hand. I also was diagnosed with OCD, bullied through elementary/highschool so I know what it is like to be the outcast. My main goal is to help those that were outcasted be seen.

Thank you Arturo for sharing space with us!
