What is Scholars of Color?

It is a platform in which scholars of color are purposefully celebrated. It’s a space where scholars of color are showcased front and center. It is a digital space where we feel empowered and resilient. Let us get to know each other. Let us cheer each other on AND show the world what we have to offer.

Let us now welcome CieraJevae Gordon to the Scholars of Color space!

Name: CieraJevae Gordon

Location:  San Francisco

Gender Pronouns: She/Her

What's your current occupation? (i.e. Student, Scientist, Coach, In transition, etc.): Poetry Teacher

Without positions or titles, how would you describe yourself?: Oakland born, Richmond raised, I am the daughter of poetry and church. I grew up learning to communicate through art because it seems like the only viable option in a city struggling with mental and community wellness. I am a lover of words and people. Being a community organizer and curator has been crucial to sustaining my own joy in this life.

What are you passionate about?: My passion unfolds at the intersection of marginalized communities and the art of storytelling. My life's work is to co-create community spaces of dialogue as we cultivate access to liberation.

What does the representation of Scholars of Color mean to you?: We live in a world focused heavily on accolades and titles and sometimes it's hard to see outside of that. The Scholars of Color allows us to step outside of this framework and center our humanity. The ways in which I love my community and work to honor our lived experiences should be just as valuable as any degree. It is a reminder to see the bigger picture and to co-create spaces that encompasses everyone and their lived experiences.

If people are interested in getting connected to you, how can they?:  IG: @Cierajevae or email me at Cierajevaet@gmail.com

Anything else you would like us to know?: Speaking on the theme of "Reclaiming Your Happiness" I just took a huge leap of faith and quit fulltime work. I am finally getting time to rest and reignite my artistry while teaching at a performing arts high school. I really do believe in the power of poetry and arts across the spectrum.

Thank you Ciera for sharing space with us!

Stay tuned everyone for more Scholars of Color profiles. Interested in being showcased yourself? Please email the Scholars of Color team at scholarsofcolor@reclaimingyourhappiness.com and we will get back to you shortly.
